Why Replace the IMS Bearing?
IMS bearing failures often occur without significant prior warning. Possible signs of a failing bearing include:
- Oil leakage on the clutch side of the engine
- Grinding or abnormal noises from the engine area
- Leakage at the IMS flange seal
Whenever the IMS seal is replaced, the IMS bearing should also be renewed. We recommend replacing the bearing during every clutch service or at intervals not exceeding 100,000 km (62,000 miles).
At the same time, the following components should be inspected:
- Timing chain drive system, including all three chain tensioners
- Chain guide rails
- Ignition system
Compatibility
This upgrade kit is designed exclusively for engines equipped with the Porsche M96 engine (model years 1997–2005, up to engine number G9507474).
Vehicles from model year 2006 onward equipped with the M97 engine are factory-fitted with larger IMS bearings (identifiable by the 12 mm flange stud). On these engines, IMS bearing replacement is only possible during complete engine disassembly.
Important:Some 2005 model-year vehicles were already equipped with M97 intermediate shafts. Please verify the application before ordering.

The kit includes all components required to replace the original IMS bearing in both single-row and dual-row applications.
Dual-Row Bearing Applications
- Use the supplied 6 mm spacer ring
- Install the enclosed retaining ring for bearing retention
- Refer to the dual-row application diagram
Single-Row Bearing Applications
- Do not use the 6 mm spacer ring
- Install the supplied open snap ring (circlip) as the retaining ring
- Refer to the single-row application diagram

The following information is not a substitute for a complete installation manual.
Removal and installation of the IMS bearing requires extensive technical expertise and must only be performed by properly trained professionals.
Improper installation procedures can result in severe engine damage. For this reason, this product is intended exclusively for professional repair facilities. Installation support is not available for private individuals or inexperienced workshops.
Before Removal
- The camshafts must be properly locked in position.
- Porsche factory procedures for timing chain tensioner removal and installation must be strictly followed.
- Camshaft timing must be checked and adjusted according to Porsche specifications.
Critical Precaution
All oil residue must be completely removed from the intermediate shaft tube before installation.
Ensure that absolutely no oil remains inside the intermediate shaft tube prior to bearing installation.
Even small amounts of residual oil can create a destructive imbalance due to centrifugal forces at high engine speeds, potentially resulting in severe engine damage.
Bearing Installation
- Before installation, the bearing must be properly chilled and the bearing housing seat heated.
- This shrink-fit procedure utilizes thermal expansion and contraction to create a secure interference fit between the bearing and its housing.

- Install the 6 mm spacer ring
- Use the enclosed retaining ring
Single-Row Bearings
- Do not install the 6 mm spacer ring
- Use the supplied open snap ring (circlip)

Technical Information
The maximum operating temperatures specified for the IMS bearing must be strictly observed.
Exposure to excessively high or low temperatures can permanently damage both the Viton® seals and the bearing grease.
- Maximum bearing housing temperature during installation: +120 °C (+248 °F)
- Take care not to overheat or damage nearby plastic components, particularly the chain guide rails.
Special Note:
If the IMS bearing has already failed, simply replacing the intermediate shaft bearing is generally not sufficient. To ensure a proper damage assessment and repair, the following procedures should be performed:
- Inspect the engine oil and oil filter for metal particles and other contaminants.
- Remove the oil pan and inspect it for bearing fragments and metal debris.
- Inspect the intermediate shaft and bearing bore for damage, wear, and dimensional integrity.
- Depending on the extent of the damage, completely disassemble the engine, thoroughly clean all oil-carrying components, and inspect and measure all affected parts. Repair or replace components as necessary.
