Porsche M97.01 wet-sump engines (986, 987.1, 996, and 997) are susceptible to oil starvation and oil aeration during sustained high-G cornering. In aggressive turns, oil in the shallow factory oil pan can move away from the pickup, or air can enter the pickup, causing pressure drops and aerated oil. This reduces oil pump efficiency and, if left unaddressed, can lead to rapid oil-pressure loss and catastrophic engine damage.

Even on street setups with Porsche-approved N-spec tires, spirited driving on mountain roads, canyon roads, or winding backroads can trigger these issues. The risk increases significantly with high-grip R-compound tires, which generate greater lateral forces and can expose the pickup precisely when the engine demands maximum oil pressure.

Aerated oil is especially dangerous because it compresses under load and cannot maintain stable hydraulic pressure. This reduces oil pump efficiency, can cause pump cavitation, and may result in brief or sustained oil-pressure loss even while the pump is operating normally. Drivers may notice momentary oil-pressure fluctuations under high load—an early warning that the factory oil pan and pickup are being overwhelmed.
