Rich History
The steel wheels used on the Porsche 356 A (1955–59) and the iconic 550 Spyder (1953–56) represent some of the earliest and most recognizable wheel designs in Porsche history. While the 356 A typically ran these wheels with polished hubcaps in showroom form, the 550 Spyder ran them bare — without hubcaps — for motorsport use, exposing the raw, purposeful steel design.
This stripped-down appearance became synonymous with lightweight Porsche competition cars of the 1950s, and it remains a defining visual element of the 550's racing identity.
Decades later, the Porsche Outlaw movement — driven by enthusiasts modifying 356s for performance and individuality — revived this look. Many modern Outlaw builds intentionally run open steel wheels with no hubcaps as a tribute to the 550 Spyder's motorsport heritage. The exposed wheel face, vent details, and visible mounting points reinforce the mechanical simplicity and purposeful character that early Porsche race cars were known for.
Wiesner's 1:8 scale reproduction captures this raw and functional aesthetic with exceptional precision, celebrating a wheel design that bridges Porsche's early racing roots and the modern Outlaw culture that continues to honor it.
Miniature Details
Wiesner's 1:8 scale steel wheel (without hubcap) from the 356 A and 550 showcases exceptional craftsmanship, blending high-resolution 3D resin printing, CNC machining, and meticulous hand-finishing. The model is mounted in a premium solid wood frame and protected by anti-reflective Artglass®, offering museum-grade clarity and UV resistance.
