Timing chains are critical engine components that should be addressed as soon as wear or stretching is noticed. The first indication is typically a misfire, as the timing chain stretches out skips a gear and creates the misfire. Shavings from the timing chain can also be noticed in the filter, around the drain plug or in the oil. The last sign is a rattle at idle and if this is missed serious engine damage can occur if the chain breaks.
