Rich History
The “batwing” steering wheel emerged in the late 1960s as a defining interior element on Porsche's long-wheelbase (LWB) models. It is most commonly associated with 1969–1973 LWB 911 cars — and is frequently seen on the celebrated 1973 Carrera RS variants — where its broad, wing-like horn pad created a distinctive, instantly recognizable silhouette.

Design-wise, the batwing balances practical ergonomics with visual presence. The wide horn pad provided a larger contact area for the driver while retaining a thin, lightweight rim for precise steering feel — an important trait for long-wheelbase cars intended for comfortable high-speed cruising as well as spirited driving. The wheel's form also reflected Porsche's late-60s interior philosophy: simple, functional, and focused on driver engagement rather than luxury.

Historically, the batwing replaced earlier small-pad designs on certain LWB cars and coexisted with other styles across the model range. Its adoption on the LWB chassis and later Carrera models helped cement the wheel as an icon of that era; enthusiasts now prize original batwing wheels for their period correctness and for the authenticity they lend to high-quality restorations.

Collectors and restorers value the batwing wheel for a few clear reasons: it visually anchors a correct-period interior, it complements long-wheelbase handling characteristics, and it signals authenticity — especially on sought-after models where factory configuration matters to provenance and value. Reproductions and framed art versions, like this Wiesner piece, celebrate that heritage by capturing the leather grain, stitching, and precise proportions that make the wheel so evocative of the era.

Miniature Details
Wiesner's 1:8 scale Batwing steering wheel showcases exceptional craftsmanship, blending high-resolution 3D resin printing, CNC machining, and meticulous hand-finishing. Each component is individually post-processed, airbrushed, and assembled to ensure faithful representation of the original part.

The model is set within a high-quality, solid wood frame and protected by anti-reflective Artglass®, offering museum-grade clarity and UV resistance. This piece makes for a striking wall display and an ideal gift for any classic Porsche enthusiast. The frame measures approximately 16 cm × 16 cm × 3.3 cm (approx. 6.3 in × 6.3 in × 1.3 in).
