Background
The early 911 F-models earned their reputation through balance, responsiveness, and mechanical clarity. Lightweight and engaging, these cars rely heavily on the precision of their drivetrain — and at its core lies the Type 901 transmission. With its dog-leg first gear (unique to early 911 transmissions) and Porsche-patented synchronizer system, the 901 defines the driving character of the earliest 911 models.

Unlike later Porsche gearboxes, the 901 offers no self-centering tolerance. Shift fork alignment must be exact. Even minor deviation can result in vague shifting, gear pop-out under load, or premature synchronizer wear. For anyone rebuilding or servicing a 901 transmission, accurate shift fork alignment is not a convenience — it is a necessity.

Usage
The FVD Brombacher Shift Fork Jig Tool is designed to accurately center the shift forks on their synchronizer sleeves during assembly of the Type 901 transmission. Used with the gear carrier installed and the transmission case open, the jig establishes a consistent neutral reference by centering each synchronizer sleeve on its hub.

By holding the shift forks in this centered position while the fork pinch bolts are secured, the tool ensures correct fork alignment and repeatable results. This prevents offset installation that can lead to incomplete gear engagement, poor shift quality, and premature synchronizer wear.
